The effect was studied of benzimidazole (I) [51-17-2] and its 2-alkyl substituted derivatives on the corrosion-electrochem. behavior of Armco Fe in 2N HCl. A test was also made of the correlation between the π-electron d. of these compounds and the following corrosion-electrochem. parameters: corrosion rate, effective activation energy of the corrosion process on an Armco Fe electrode, the slope of the polarization curves, polarization resistance, steady-state potential and screening effect. The distribution of the π-electron d. for I was calculated by the MO LCAO method and is presented in diagrams.
