2-Acylimidazoles (74 compounds) were prepared by acylating imidazoles in the presence of NEt3. 2-Imidazolecarboxylates were similarly obtained with chloroformates. Similar reactions with phthaloyl chlorides gave imidazo[1,2-b]isoquinoline-5,10-diones which underwent ring cleavage to 2-imidazolyl 2-acylphenyl ketones.
