This study aimed to improve the effect of moderate elec. field (MEF) treatment on the structural and physicochem. properties of maize starch by adding 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([bmim]Cl). Starch (20%, w/v) was mixed with [bmim]Cl solution (0, 30%, 50%, and 70%, weight/weight), and then electro-treated (5 V/cm, 50 Hz) at 60 °C for 10 min. As the [bmim]Cl concentration increased, the electro-induced disintegration of starch granules was enhanced due to the intensified Joule heat and decreased pH of reaction bulk. After electro-treated in 70% weight/weight [bmim]Cl, a transparent solution of starch was observed and the recovered starch tended to dissolve rather than swell in water. Compared with water-bath heating, MEF caused more destruction in the granular and crystal structure, increased the particle size, decreased the pasting viscosity, and reduced the gelatinization enthalpy and thermostability of starch. The obtained results could provide guidance for the application of electro-based techniques in starch modification.

With the rapid development of economy and global industrialization, the problem of air pollution has become a worldwide topic. The efficient filtration of airborne particulate matters (PMs) is critical for human health and environmental sustainability. Herein, self-supporting bio-based polyelectrolyte aerogels were prepared and acted as the advanced filters for efficient removal of PMs. The natural choline cation (Ch+) or the organic cation, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (Bmim+), are introduced into alginate (Alg) to form the polyelectrolytes of ChAlg or BmimAlg due to the electrostatic interaction. By the directional freeze-drying in liquid N2, hierarchically porous aerogels with mech. robustness, flexibility and thermo-stability were prepared This specific structure may permit the polluted air to pass adequately through the aerogel channels, which are conducive to intercept various PMs with different diameters As an example, the removal efficiency of ChAlg aerogels for PM10, PM2.5 and PM0.3 are resp. up to (99.24 ± 0.03)%, (99.22 ± 0.02)%, and (93.41 ± 0.22)% within 15 h durability test. One outstanding character lies in ensuring high removal efficiency, while achieving a good balance with the low pressure drop (10 Pa), which is driven by synergistic effect of passive trapping and electrostatic capture. Moreover, the polyelectrolyte aerogels exhibit excellent antimicrobial activity and regenerated capacity. These properties endow the aerogels of polyelectrolyte ChAlg or BmimAlg with remarkable potential as new advanced filters for masks and other personal protective equipment.

The approach provides a cost-effective catalytic protocol for hydrogenation, is scalable, and can be utilized in the synthesis of tetrabromo- and carboxyl-substituted motifs through functionalization of the hydrogenation product. The systematic theor. mechanistic modelings suggest that low-valent Cr and Co monohydride species, most likely from zerovalent transition metals, are capable of mediating these hydrogenations of fused PAHs.
