By simply grafting a -CN group and/or a -OCH3 group onto the meta- and/or para-site of the C-ring, a series of Ir(III) complexes bearing a similar mol. platform of bis(1,2-diphenyl-1H-benzimidazolato-N,C2′)iridium(III)(acetylacetonate), but showing fine-tuned phosphorescence covering nearly the whole window of the visible spectrum with a wide color-tuning range of 109 nm was acquired. With the help of DFT calculations, it was revealed that if the C-related arene moiety of the CN̂ ligand (C-ring) contributes substantially to both the HOMO and LUMO of an Ir(III) complex, the concurrent introduction of an electron-donating -OCH3 and an electron-withdrawing -CN groups on the C-ring at the meta- and para-sites relative to the Ir atom may lead to a favorable synergetic substituent effect on the color-tuning direction. This may represent a facile yet effective mol. design strategy for Ir(III) complexes with a desirous emission color. A bluish green organic light-emitting diode (OLED) based on one of the objective complexes displayed a maximum current efficiency of 62.1 cd A-1, an external quantum efficiency of 19.8%, and a brightness of 48 040 cd m-2, implying that high-performance red and blue OLED phosphors as well as libraries of Ir(III) complexes bearing similar mol. platforms may be developed through this -OCH3 and -CN synergetic substitution strategy.

Efficient manufacturing cellulose is a promising solution to solve severe environmental problems resulted from non-degradable plastics. Herein, we propose a plasticizing-rolling technique to manufacture cellulose featuring high cellulose ratios (50 weight%) and low temperature (65°C). Plasticization effect from plasticizers (BmimCl and LiCl) uniformly plasticizes cellulose while shear effect from rolling destroys the crystal area of cellulose, both increasing the mobility of cellulosic mol. chains. SEM images and XRD anal. reveal prepared films are all cellulose composite (ACC), cellulose I in the core area and cellulose II in the surface area. ACC films have high transparency (81%), tensile strength (73.6 ± 4.8 MPa), and thermal stability. The relationship of structure and properties of ACC films was also discussed and a particle-matrix composite model was proposed to analyze high transparency of ACC films. In conclusion, the proposed method presents a potential to efficiently produce high-performance cellulose materials at large scale.

Dendrimeric Pt-(II) complexes [(CN̂)-Pt(dpm)] and [Pt(CN̂)2] (Hdpm = dipivaloylmethane, HCN̂ = 1,2-diphenylbenzoimidazole and its derivatives containing the carbazole dendrons) have been synthesized and characterized systematically. All of the complexes display green emission in the range of 495-535 nm that originated from the 360-440 nm absorption bands, which are assigned to dπ-(Pt)→π*-(L) metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) mixed with intraligand π-(L)→π*-(L) transition. Solution photoluminescence quantum yield (φp 0.26-0.31) of the heteroleptic complexes [(CdoldolanddoldolN)-Pt-(dpm)] obviously increases when compared with that of complex [(CdoldolanddoldolN)-Pt-(acac)]. Organic light-emitting diode devices based on these Pt-(II) complexes with a multilayer configuration were fabricated and gave desirable electroluminescent (EL) performances, such as non- or less red-shifted EL spectra, in comparison with the photoluminescence spectra and slow efficiency roll-off with increasing brightness or c.d. Complex [(t-BuCzCzPBI)-Pt-(dpm)] (where t-BuCzCzPBI = 1-(4-(3,6-di-(3,6-di-t-butyl-carbazol-9-yl))-carbazol-9-yl)-phenyl-2-phenylbenzoimidazole) showed the best performance, with a maximum current efficiency of 29.31 cd/A and a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 9.04% among the fabricated devices. Likewise, for homoleptic [Pt-(t-BuCzCzPBI)2] dendrimer, the powder φp (0.14) and maximum EQE (0.74%) improve by 7 and 7.4 times, resp., as high as they do for nondendrimeric [Pt-(1,2-diphenylbenzoimidazole)2] (0.02, 0.10%), although its efficiency is still lower than that of the heteroleptic counterpart due to the severely distorted square-planar geometry of the emitting core. These results reveal that large steric hindrance from ancillary ligand (dpm) or the homoleptic conformation can effectively inhibit intermol. interaction for these dendrimeric Pt-(II) complexes.

Complexes [Ir(Phbi)2(PyPhbi)][PF6] (1, H-Phbi = 1,2-diphenylbenzimidazole, PyPhbi = 3-phenyl-2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole) [Ir(Phbi)2(PyCbzbi)][PF6] [2, PyCbzbi = 1-(4-(9-carbazolyl)phenyl)-2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole], [Ir(Cbzbi)2(PyPhbi)][PF6] [3, H-Cbzbi = 1-(4-(9-carbazolyl)phenyl)-2-phenylbenzimidazole] and [Ir(Cbzbi)2(PyCbzbi)][PF6] (4) were prepared by reacting the corresponding chloro-bridged dimers [Ir2(Phbi)4(μ-Cl)2] and [Ir2(Cbzbi)4(μ-Cl)2] with pyridylbenzimidazoles PyPhbi and PyCbzbi. The photophys. and electrochem. properties of this series have been systematically investigated. The complexes exhibit strong luminescence in both solution and in neat films, as well as excellent redox reversibility. Introducing carbazole groups into the complexes is found to lead to substantially enhanced photoluminescence quantum efficiency in the neat film, but has little effect on the emitting color and excited-state characteristics as supported by d. functional theory (DFT) results. DFT calculations also suggest that functionalized complexes 24 reveal better hole-transporting properties than 1. More importantly, all complexes effectively reduce the degradation reaction to some extent in metal-centered (3MC) excited-states, demonstrating their stability. Further studies indicate that restriction of opening of the structures in the 3MC state is caused by the unique mol. conformation of the phenylbenzimidazole ligand, which is first demonstrated here in cationic iridium(iii) complexes without intramol. π-π stacking. These results presented here would provide valuable information for designing and synthesizing highly efficient and stable cationic iridium(III) complexes suitable for the optical devices.

Excellent ablative properties of ethylene-propylene-diene elastomer (EPDM) composites were obtained by adding pretreated polysulfonamide pulp (PSA-pulp). The effects of pulp pretreatment and pulp content on the mech. and ablative properties of PSA-pulp/EPDM composites were studied. Exptl. results showed that the tensile strength decreased slightly and the ablative properties increased by 3 folds on addition of 10 phr pretreated PSA-pulp. This significant improvement in the ablative properties was attributed to the enhanced dispersion degree and improved interfacial adhesion of pretreated PSA-pulp to EPDM matrix, which were observed from SEM. The ablation behavior of pretreated PSA-pulp/EPDM composites was proposed in accordance with the characterizations of thermogravimetric anal. (TGA), energy disperse X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and pyrolysis-gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS). The carbonized PSA-pulp acted as a skeleton in retaining the char layer and reduced the material loss during the high temperature ablation.
