A direct route was sought whereby nucleophilic addition of acetylene to aryl carboxaldehydes would be followed by reduction or substitution of the resulting propargyl alc. The direct reduction, methylation, and dimethylation of these readily available alcs. provide efficient access to this uncommon functional array. In addition, an unusual silane exchange reaction was observed in the reduction of the propargylic alcs.

The crystal structures of halo-(2-dibutylaminoethanolato)copper(II) [(C10H22NOCuX)4, X = Cl (I), Br (II) were determined by single-crystal x-ray diffractometer methods using 4331 and 3915 independent reflections, resp., from 3-dimensional diffractometer data (Mo Ka radiation). The isomorphous compounds belong to space group P1̅ with a 15·563(10), b 16·280(11), c 11·659(8) Å, α 93·49(10), β 100·32(10), γ 112·51(10)° for I and a 15·539(10), b 16·452(11), c 11·766(8) Å, α 94·58(10), β 100·65(10), γ 111·67(10)° for II. The structures were refined by least-squares methods to final residuals of 0.084 and 0.071, resp. The tetrameric clusters of cubane-type mol. structures have mean Cu-Cu separations of 3·240(3) and 3·268(3) Å. The Cu coordination is distorted square pyramidal with Cu bonded to 3 O, 1N, and 1 halogen. The distance to the apical O is longer than to the other 2 O. The average bond lengths are Cu-O 1·9778) and 1·963(10) Å (short Cu-O separations), Cu-O 2·424(8) and 2·480(10) Å (long-Cu-O separations), Cu-N 2·054(11) and 2·066(13) Å, and Cu-hal 2·234(4) and 2·382(3) Å.

Herein we present a comprehensive study on the role of Bronsted-acidic imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) and imidazolium salts promoting the reaction between carboxyl and epoxide groups in a controlled manner at solvent-free and mild conditions. ILs were evaluated toward their ability to self-catalyze reactions between carboxyl groups and epoxy rings. Thus, an epoxy model reactant denoted Ph glycidyl ether (PGE) was reacted with different ILs, and the reaction kinetics was followed by time-dependent FTIR spectroscopy. The resulting products were characterized by 1H NMR and MALDI-TOF, which also allowed a comprehensive investigation of the reaction mechanism by following the reaction intermediates formation. The detected intermediates were then evaluated by d. functional theory (DFT) simulations to calculate their energy profiles, revealing the preferred mechanism pathways. These mono-, bi-, and tetra-functionalized ILs (with carboxyl groups) acted as all-in-one reaction systems for materials synthesis or modification, with the potential of producing a broad range of epoxy based materials via metal catalyst-free coupling reactions. A solvent-free self-catalyzed platform for reactions with epoxy materials at mild temperatures based on Bronsted-acidic imidazolium salts.

A general approach for the synthesis of bis(imidazolium) dichloride salts from imidazoles and dichloroalkanes is reported. Typical limitations of this reaction for the formation of methylene-bridged derivatives are addressed herein through the use of excess CH2Cl2 in the presence of DMSO as a polar cosolvent, significantly improving the conversion rates presumably via stabilization of the initial SN2 transition state. The method also is applicable to the formation of bis(pyridinium) dichloride salts from pyridine derivatives, and to the direct synthesis of metal-bis(NHC) complexes from imidazoles.

This paper presents the features of corn stover pretreated under mild conditions in aqueous solution of a carboxylic acid functionalized ionic liquids 1-carboxymethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (IL-COOH). The results revealed that such pretreatment selectively removed hemicelluloses in corn stover, resulting in cellulose- and lignin-rich pulps with moderate enzymic reactivity. The corn stover pretreated in 40 wt% IL-COOH at 120 °C for 4 h demonstrated increases in cellulose and lignin contents from 37.9% to 55.6%, and 21.1% to 26.5%, resp., while decrease in the content of hemicellulose from 24.4% to 9.34%. Subsequent enzymic hydrolysis of the pulps achieved from pretreatment in 50 wt% IL-COOH aqueous solution at 105 °C for 4 h produced 0.32 g.g-1 glucose and 0.45 g.g-1 total reducing sugars. The recyclability and reusability of IL-COOH in the pretreatment system was also investigated.
