A series of half-sandwich iridium(III) benzimidazole-appended imidazolium-based N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) antitumor complexes [(η5-Cpx)Ir(CN̂)Cl]Cl, where Cpx is pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) or its biphenyl derivative (Cpxbiph) and CN̂ is a NHC chelating ligand, were successfully synthesized and characterized. The IrIII complexes showed potential antitumor activity against A549 cells, at most three times more potent than cis-platin under the same conditions. Complexes could bind to BSA by a static quenching mode, catalyzing the change of NADH to NAD+ and inducing the production of reactive oxygen species (maximum turnover number, 9.8), which play an important role in regulating cell apoptosis. Confocal microscopy showed that the complexes could specifically target lysosomes in cells with a Pearson’s co-localization coefficient 0.76 and 0.72 after 1 h and 6 h, resp., followed an energy-dependent cellular uptake mechanism and damaged the integrity of lysosomes. At the same time, complexes caused a marked loss of mitochondrial membrane potential.

Herein, we have developed an anodic electrodeposition (AED) approach to fabricate a uniformly deposited 2D conducting MOF on nickel foam and use it directly as electrodes for supercapacitors without any additives. This study aimed to improve the effect of moderate elec. field (MEF) treatment on the structural and physicochem. properties of maize starch by adding 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([bmim]Cl). Starch (20%, w/v) was mixed with [bmim]Cl solution (0, 30%, 50%, and 70%, weight/weight), and then electro-treated (5 V/cm, 50 Hz) at 60 °C for 10 min. As the [bmim]Cl concentration increased, the electro-induced disintegration of starch granules was enhanced due to the intensified Joule heat and decreased pH of reaction bulk. After electro-treated in 70% weight/weight [bmim]Cl, a transparent solution of starch was observed and the recovered starch tended to dissolve rather than swell in water. Compared with water-bath heating, MEF caused more destruction in the granular and crystal structure, increased the particle size, decreased the pasting viscosity, and reduced the gelatinization enthalpy and thermostability of starch. The obtained results could provide guidance for the application of electro-based techniques in starch modification.

With the rapid development of economy and global industrialization, the problem of air pollution has become a worldwide topic. The efficient filtration of airborne particulate matters (PMs) is critical for human health and environmental sustainability. Herein, self-supporting bio-based polyelectrolyte aerogels were prepared and acted as the advanced filters for efficient removal of PMs. The natural choline cation (Ch+) or the organic cation, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (Bmim+), are introduced into alginate (Alg) to form the polyelectrolytes of ChAlg or BmimAlg due to the electrostatic interaction. By the directional freeze-drying in liquid N2, hierarchically porous aerogels with mech. robustness, flexibility and thermo-stability were prepared This specific structure may permit the polluted air to pass adequately through the aerogel channels, which are conducive to intercept various PMs with different diameters As an example, the removal efficiency of ChAlg aerogels for PM10, PM2.5 and PM0.3 are resp. up to (99.24 ± 0.03)%, (99.22 ± 0.02)%, and (93.41 ± 0.22)% within 15 h durability test. One outstanding character lies in ensuring high removal efficiency, while achieving a good balance with the low pressure drop (10 Pa), which is driven by synergistic effect of passive trapping and electrostatic capture. Moreover, the polyelectrolyte aerogels exhibit excellent antimicrobial activity and regenerated capacity. These properties endow the aerogels of polyelectrolyte ChAlg or BmimAlg with remarkable potential as new advanced filters for masks and other personal protective equipment.

Synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from carbohydrate is one of vital step for bio-refinery development. In this work, a novel strategy was developed for catalytic conversion of fructose to HMF in 2-butanol. The inexpensive ionic liquids were used to adjust the acidity of biobased acid catalyst for enhancing the dehydration of fructose to HMF. The combination of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl) with oxalic acid afforded an excellent HMF yield of 97.1% at 98.7% fructose conversion under mild conditions of 100°C and 60 min, owing to the enhanced dissociation ability of oxalic acid by [Bmim]Cl. A possible dissociation mechanism of oxalic acid induced by [Bmim]Cl was proposed based on control experiments and detailed analyses with NMR and FT-IR techniques. It involved that the [Bmim]Cl interacted with oxalic acid through hydrogen bond, which decreased the electron d. of oxygen atom on hydroxyl group and weakened the O-H bond, thus making the hydrogen in the O-H group to easily dissociate in the form of H+. Moreover, the reusability of oxalic acid and [Bmim]Cl was demonstrated, and both could be reused up to six times without significant loss in activity.
